Born to Spin

Tammy Meissner was born on a small farm in Appling, Georgia where her deep love for animals and hands-on work began. On the farm, she raised sheep, llamas, Angora rabbits, and mohair goats, personally shearing her fiber animals in preparation for processing and spinning yarns. Spinning, weaving, crocheting, and knitting are among her passions, and the final product always makes her heart sing. Sharing this knowledge, especially with children, is something she cherishes, as she loves teaching the arts to others.

Tammy travels across the United States with her artist husband (reverese side), spending time with their grandchildren while also attending art shows. Meeting new people and sharing her love for the arts brings her immense joy. At these shows, she enjoys demonstrating her work and encourages children to touch the fibers. She loves seeing them help weave a few rows or spin roving to make a quick bracelet.

Her creative process begins with selecting the fiber, processing and dyeing the wools, and spinning the roving into yarn or choosing the right colors and textures to create different items. She employs various traditional tools in her craft. Homespun yarns are her preferred choice when creating beautiful shawls, often woven on a 7-foot triangular peg loom. She also enjoys weaving scarves on a hand loom or her Louet floor loom. Always eager to learn new techniques, she continues to challenge herself in her love for crocheting. With multiple projects on the go at any given time, her passion for art is ever-present.
